Take your first step toward a well-paying  job in tech with a free, downloadable guide from women.nyc

New York’s billion-dollar tech sector has nearly doubled since 2009. That growth has meant one thing: high demand for skilled workers. In fact, recent research from LinkedIn shows New York City faces shortages in the thousands for hires in tech fields like data science.

If you’re considering a tech career but don’t know where to start, you’re in luck. Women.nyc has compiled a guide with dozens of free and low-cost classes across the boroughs. It’s one of a variety of initiatives designed to prepare New Yorkers for in-demand jobs in the City’s tech scene.

The 30-page guide was designed specifically for newbies and job-changers. Most of the training programs don’t require tech experience or a college degree of any kind. What’s more, they’re all geared toward key fields pegged for double-digit growth: cybersecurity, web development and data science/analysis. According to research from Glassdoor, entry-level jobs in these fields can pay $75,000-$98,000.

The courses are available in-person and online to fit a range of needs and schedules.

In addition to conventional bootcamps and classes, the guide features some surprising resources, including:

  • Open labs at select New York Public Library locations that provide one-on-one support for coding projects, online courses and other tech questions.
  • Free online classes from Flatiron School and Skillcrush that help beginners learn coding languages at their own pace and schedule.
  • Intensive multi-week programs, such as the NYC Web Development Fellowship or the Fullstack Cyber Bootcamp, developed in partnership with the City of New York to connect low-income New Yorkers with key skills in growing industries.

Of course, no intro class will give you the mastery required for a high-paying tech career. But these courses can help you make a career switch or just be more valuable in your current job quickly and affordably.
