Introducing our collab with Amex to promote women-owned businesses in NYC (and a new map to find them!)

By Faye Penn and American Express are making it easier for New Yorkers to support restaurants, stores, spas, and other businesses that are owned by women.

Shop Women-Owned NYC launches today (March 1), kicking off Women’s History Month with a get-out-the-wallet push that’s being promoted on LinkNYC kiosks, bus shelters, digitally, and at participating women-owned businesses throughout New York City.

Look for the “Shop Women Owned NYC” decals on storefront windows or search this new map.

The campaign features businesses including the Astoria-based home and gift store Lockwood, Chinatown-based The Sill, Lower East Side vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy, Urban Asanas Yoga Studio in Crown Heights, and Bulletin, a retail shop featuring only women-made products, and Porteñas, a yerba mate spot in Williamsburg.

More than 50,000 women-owned businesses and women entrepreneurs in New York City generate over $50 billion annually for the city and provide jobs for over 190,000 employees. Yet because they are historically denied access to capital and other resources to start and grow their businesses, women-owned ventures lag in size and employment compared to businesses owned by men.

“With their passion and ingenuity, women entrepreneurs keep New York’s economy thriving and its neighborhoods unique,” said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen. “There’s no better way to kick off Women’s History Month than by launching the Shop Women Owned NYC campaign. It will shed light on the hundreds of thousands of women retailers throughout the city and will drive traffic to their businesses.”

Through initiatives like Shop Women Owned NYC, the city’s women entrepreneurs are given the support and resources they need to become financially empowered.

New York City is home to more than 350,000 women-owned businesses. Women-owned businesses generate more than $50 billion in revenue for New York City every year and employ more than 190,000 employees. Women invest 90% of their income back into their families and local communities and drive 85% of business and consumer purchasing.

However, women still struggle with limited access to capital, information, skills, and mentorship, perpetuating a significant gender gap in their business growth compared to businesses owned and run by men. Deputy Mayor Glen founded in 2018 to tear down those barriers and build on the efforts of WE NYC, a program for entrepreneurs launched in 2015. seeks to empower and connect women with resources and tools, including free expert legal advice, financial assistance, and networking and mentorship opportunities.
